Become An Artist



Each year, hundreds of artists from across the USA send their art to Courage Cards, hoping to be chosen as Courage Card artists. All entries are reviewed by our design team, and 30-40 become Courage Cards.

Courage Card artists are paid a licensing fee of $400 for each image selected. They receive national recognition in our annual catalog and promotional pieces; on our website, CourageCards.org, which features profiles of our artists; and in our advertising (radio, TV, internet, and print). The artists retain ownership and copyright of their art.

From art to paper to printing, all Courage Cards are 100% made in the USA.

Many Courage Card artists are people with disabilities, but artists of all ages and abilities are eligible to enter.



Submission Guidelines


1. Themes and subjects

Courage Cards are holiday cards. Most are sent by businesses to their clients and customers.

We review only Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's designs. We do not review designs for other holidays or occasions. We do not review submissions for verses or text to go inside our cards.

All submissions must fit one of these themes:

Thanksgiving (examples: autumn landscape, leaves, pumpkins, wreaths, harvest)

Winter city scenes (examples: Minneapolis, St. Paul, Chicago, New York, Main Street USA)

Winter landscape/wildlife (examples: trees, rivers, cardinals, chickadees, penguins, the north woods)

Christmas traditions (examples: trees, snowmen, wreaths, pine boughs, holly, stars, bells, poinsettias, snowflakes, ornaments, nostalgic images, sleighs and other holiday designs)

Religious Christmas/peace (examples: nativity scenes, the Three Kings, Bethlehem, Madonna and Child, drummer boy, children of the world, doves)

2. Styles and sizes

Courage Cards accepts art in a variety of styles: traditional, graphic, contemporary, and photography.

Courage Cards are 5 5/8" x 7 7/8". Entries may be card size or larger (up to 8 ½" x 11"). Depending on the proportions, cropping may occur.


3. Entry requirements and terms

All art must be the original work of the artist. Please do not send originals unless we request them. Send color copies, prints, or photos.

Submissions are limited to eight entries per artist. Entries should not be larger than 8 ½" x 11".

The artist's name and title of the work should appear on the back of each entry.

An entry fee of $10 per artist is requested. (Per artist, not per submission. The fee is $10 whether you submit one entry or eight.) Please include a check or money order payable to Courage Center.

All entries must be received on or before November 30. If you would like us to acknowledge receipt of your entry, include a self-addressed stamped postcard.

Courage Center is not responsible for the loss, damage, or return of art entries. If you wish your entry to be returned, you must enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope. For liability reasons, all entries are deemed non-original with no monetary value.

4. Notification, compensation, and rights

On or before April 15, all artists who sent their work to Courage Cards will be notified about whether their art was selected.

Artists will be paid a licensing fee of $400 for each work selected.

Courage Card artists retain ownership and copyright of their art. Artists grant Courage Cards the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute their art as cards for five years. The artists' name, the title of the work, and the copyright notification appear on the back of each card printed. Artists' profiles are published on our website, CourageCards.org.

Courage Card artists are encouraged to register their work with the US Copyright Office.


5. Originals and insurance

Courage Cards requires original artwork for final review and reproduction. If we request an original, a professional transparency, slide, or high-resolution scan may be substituted. If an original work is mailed, it must be unframed and packed in quality materials. We will reimburse shipping costs and insure the work for up to a maximum of $500 while in our possession. Original art will be returned via insured UPS.
